Tim Dorsey, former Tampa Tribune reporter and author of a popular quirky Florida crime novel series, will be featured at the inaugural Cleveland Street Book and Wine Festival in Station Square Park on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 4 to 9 p.m.

Dorsey, who is currently working on his 14th novel that paints Florida with a broad brush, crafts larger-than-life characters in stranger-than-fiction circumstances for his works such as Florida Roadkill and Gator A Go-Go.

Dorsey will discuss his work at Station Square Park from 8 to 8:30 and will follow this with a meet and greet and book signing. Copies of his books will be for sale at the event.

Joining Dorsey will be authors Kathy Carmichael (Hot Flash), Kim Llewellyn (The Quest for the Holy Veil) and award-winner photographer and author Robert La Follette.

The Book and Wine Festival, a large used book sale sponsored by the Clearwater Downtown Development Board, is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Clearwater Library.

The festival, that will be held in the park and along the 600 block of Cleveland Street, will also include poetry readings, live entertainment, a wine tasting, and unique gourmet food and merchandise for sale. Admission is free to the public.

Cleveland Street restaurants and shops will offer coupons redeemable the day of the event and hold chance drawings to win food and merchandise gift certificates good for future visits.

In the event of inclement weather, the Book and Wine Festival will move inside the Atrium Lobby of the SunTrust building, 601 Cleveland St., directly across from Station Square Park.

With work on the Cleveland Street Streetscape complete, city officials have begun focusing on marketing the new downtown (see market study). A Retail Request for Proposals to attract businesses along the newly-completed thoroughfare was released Jan. 13, and a fresh, new logo that will be placed on street banners and other collateral materials has been adopted. Dubbed "The Cleveland Street District," regular street festivals and events are expected to draw patrons to the area. A designer/builder for the Downtown Boat Slips will be chosen in the first part of 2008, with construction of the 120 to 149 public boat slips at the foot of the Memorial Causeway Bridge slated to begin the following fall. The project should take around a year to complete and cost about $11-million.
