Clearwater will soon be home to one of the most spectacular and impressive
public library facilities in North America. The new Main Library is under construction
and will open in the spring of 2004. In addition to distinctive architecture, the
library will feature a café, story time room, local history center, teen
room, computer lab, meeting rooms, rooftop terrace and galleries. A dramatic four-story

- How was the site chosen?
Voters selected the site by referendum in July 2000, when they also authorized

Penny
for Pinellas Funds. The Clearwater
Library Foundation is conducting a capital campaign to raise the $5 million
in private funds.
- What does private funding pay for?
Private funding is being used toward construction and furnishings. As dollars
are donated, new furnishings will be purchased for additional areas of the library.

the Yale University School of Architecture.

The new facility will contain approximately 750 tons of structural steel,
4,000 cubic yards of concrete, 1,900 light fixtures and 970 pieces of glass.
The foundation pilings for the building are as deep as 72 feet and anchor the
Library to the bedrock.

The new Main Library will serve as a cultural attraction and northern anchor
of the downtown, with gallery exhibits, special programs and a variety of community
