 Green Buildings & Facilities
As times change and sustainability becomes more of a global concern than it once had been, developers and builders are building smarter and greener. The City of Clearwater recognizes two types of green building certification: LEED and FGBC.
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and is a program of the U.S. Green Building Council, a non-profit community of leaders working to make green buildings available to everyone within a generation. It is a nationally accepted benchmark for design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. A LEED rating shows that a building has been certified to incorporate multiple energy-efficient and environmentally conscious resources and elements.
Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) is a nonprofit Florida corporation dedicated to improving the built environment. Their mission is "to provide a statewide green building program with environmental and economic benefits." The FGBC certifies using five green building standards: Green Home Standard, Green Development Standard, Green High Rise Standard, Green Local Government Standard for Green Cities & Counties, and Green Commercial Buildings Standard.
