Four Bridges on Island Way to be Replaced

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The City of Clearwater recently received condition assessments of nine bridges within the Island Estates subdivision, and four of them show significant deterioration and will need to be replaced. Two bridges are located on Island Way (between Skiff Point and Palm Island SE), and two are on Harbor Passage (from Island Way to Snug Island and also Harbor Island). The City of Clearwater will perform bridge reconstruction, and design is currently underway. Final plans are expected within nine to 12 months.

The city anticipates construction to begin in 2014. In the meantime, certain portions of the bridges will be restricted during the design phase. Safety zones will be marked with road striping in order to maintain safe means of access until the bridges are replaced, and designated areas will not be open to vehicular traffic (to be marked by roadway striping, signage, and barriers).

All nine bridges were constructed in 1965 and were made of reinforced concrete. Four of the nine bridges have aged much faster than the others. The life expectancy of such structures is estimated to be 40 to 60 years.

After construction begins, Island Way residents can expect traffic to be maintained during phased construction. For more information, call the Engineering Department at (727) 562-4750.
