CLEARWATER, Fla. – The City of Clearwater’s Special Events team presented veterans at the CW. Bill Young Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center with a banner filled with more than 200 signatures and messages of appreciation obtained during the annual Clearwater Celebrates America event held on July 4, 2014 at Coachman Park.
The idea to create the banner came from City of Clearwater’s Special Events staff member Kris Koch. “During the 4th of July we think about what it means to be an American and celebrate those who have made such sacrifices for our country. We thought it was important to create an opportunity for Clearwater citizens to share their appreciation for these men and women during Clearwater Celebrates America. We were proud to represent our community in presenting this banner to the men and women who have fought to protect our freedom and all of the things we enjoy as Americans,” said Koch. Most of the signatures on the banner were written by children attending the event. Some of the messages include: “Zackery Willard, Good Luck Dad,” “Happy Birthday Popa,” “Thank you fellow veterans. We pray for you every day,” and “You have served us well, good sirs and ma’ams!”
The banner was accepted by Director of Healthcare System Suzanne Klinker. The 3’ x 5’ banner will hang in the VA Center’s Community Living Center which provides long-term care for up to 85 veterans.
