CLEARWATER -- Most robbery suspects opt for a car, a bicycle or just their two

legs for a quick getaway after a heist.

That wasn't the case late Wednesday at the Super Target at Clearwater Mall,

2747 Gulf-to-Bay Blvd., when a man made off with a 32-inch flat-screen TV on

a skateboard that he also used inside the store.

Now, Clearwater Police detectives are releasing video surveillance images of

the suspect's unusual heist in the hope of getting clues from the public.

The crime occurred just as the store was closing about 11 p.m. Wednesday. He

entered the store about a minute before closing and first was looking at cell

phone cases. The next stop was the TV section, where it didn't take him long

to find one he liked -- a 32-inch Element LCD version. The video shows him

skating through parts of the store with the TV in his hands.

When store personnel confronted him near the store's exit, he brandished a

utility knife and then ran out the door, TV and skateboard in his hand. Once

he was outside the doors, he jumped on the skateboard and headed toward

Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard. He last was seen zipping eastbound on the major

He was in the store for only about three minutes.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 20s with a thin build. He is

about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 150. He was wearing a black hoodie,

dark jeans, green Nike shoes and had a black backpack. The make, model and

year of the skateboard are unknown - but it was brown in color with

orange-yellow wheels.

"I've never seen anything like it," said John Brown, the robbery detective

investigating the case. "He gets an A for creativity. But he committed a

serious crime and we need to find him."

Anyone with information on who the robbery and aggravated assault suspect is

should call Clearwater Police at 562-4242.

(For those desiring sound on this, I will be out of pocket from about 9:15ish

to about 11ish.)
