Water Service Line Company Not Endorsed by City of Clearwater

CLEARWATER, Fla. – A company called “HomeServe USA” that offers “water service line coverage,” has recently been soliciting endorsements from the City of Clearwater and direct business from Clearwater residents. The city’s Public Utilities Department has been fielding calls from concerned citizens who have received the company’s aggressive marketing literature.

For an annual fee, the company claims to provide insurance coverage for service and repairs to private homes and business water and sewer utility lines. The company’s correspondence, which also seeks payment, claims to be an “authorized representative for the contract issuer,

Technology Insurance Company.” Recipients may mistake the official-looking solicitation as an invoice.

While the company’s pitch appears to be legitimate and compelling, the city definitely does not recommend HomeServe USA. The city makes no claim or endorsement of Homeserve USA or any other private company that offers utility line services. Citizens who choose to subscribe to this or any similar service do so at their own risk.

The city handles installation, maintenance and repair of city utility lines that extend from its water facilities to the customer’s meter and sewer service from 3 feet behind the curb to city’s sewage treatment facilities only. Utility lines from meters and curb distance into individual businesses or residences are the sole responsibility of those owners.

Home and business owners who consider doing business with HomeServe USA or any other company, are strongly encouraged to thoroughly research the prospective business ahead of time and decide for themselves whether the company is legitimate, and whether it meets their individual needs and budgets.

Information on investigating prospective businesses is available through Pinellas County’s Justice and Consumer Services at (727) 464-6200. Information on the city’s water and sewer service is available online at www.myclearwater.com.
