CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Wounded Warriors Project will make a stop in Clearwater at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center for a sailing event for wounded veterans and their families. On Saturday, March 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., about 26 veterans, their families, support staff, and volunteers will gather at the Sailing Center (1001 Gulf Blvd.), and the wounded veterans will have the opportunity to sail, regardless of ability or skill level.

Veterans may also ride in a six-man canoe, thanks to a local racing chapter that operates out of the Clearwater Community Sailing Center. The Warriors will be able go out on the water in boats that are custom designed for people with disabilities. Pontoon boats will be available that accommodate Wounded Warriors in wheelchairs. Attendees will dine on-shore picnic-style after the boating activities.

The event is hosted by Sailability of Greater Tampa Bay, which provides affordable, accessible, sailing activities and education to children and adults of all abilities. The group is dedicated to community integration to improve the quality of life for all involved.

"This is a big weekend for the Wounded Warriors," says Tom Calhoun, Clearwater Sailability volunteer and one of Clearwater's Marine Advisory Board members. "These warriors give so much, and being a part of this event is just a small way that we can acknowledge the sacrifices they've made."

The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project is to honor and empower wounded warriors. This not-for-profit organization works to raise awareness and to enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured servicemen and women aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is donating a pontoon boat to take additional family members out on the water. To learn more about the Wounded Warrior Project, visit For information about Sailability of Greater Tampa Bay, visit
