Parking Spaces Become Public Parks with Reclaim Your Space Event

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Can a parking space be anything other than a place for cars? Letís find out! Artists, designers, and residents are invited to transform metered parking spaces into temporary public parks, or parklets, at the Reclaim Your Space event. On Thursday, Nov. 7, several metered parking spaces along the Cleveland Street District in downtown will be transformed for a day into mini-parks.

Applications are currently being accepted from individuals or groups who would like to install a mini-park. All parklets must be designed to promote love of Clearwater, recreation, green living, alternative transportation, or a combination of concepts. Applications are due by Friday, Sept. 27, and selected applicants will be notified by Oct. 18. Download the application at www.myclearwater.com/info/special_events/pdf/Reclaim_Your_Space_App_1113.pdf.

A sample mini-park will be on display at the Clearwater Farmer's Market on Sept. 4, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Cleveland Street District. "This one-day event is a 'Love Note' from the city to its residents," says Lauren Matzke, Planning Manager and coordinator of the event. "It's part of the 'For the Love of Clearwater' series, sponsored in part by the Clearwater Downtown Partnership."

The event is based on National PARK(ing) Day and other similar events held in Orlando, Ithaca, and Sacramento. This is the event's first year in Clearwater. For more information, call Lauren Matzke at (727) 562-4547, email lauren.matzke@myclearwater.com, or visit www.myclearwater.com.
