City of Clearwater Wins USA Today’s Best Beach Town Award

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The City of Clearwater is proud to announce that it has won top honors in the USA Today poll of Best Beach Towns in Florida for 2013.

The contest was held by online vote to choose one out of ten popular beach towns selected by Florida International University professor Dr. Stephen Leatherman. Results were announced in this morning’s edition of USA Today.

Of the more than 30,000 votes cast, Clearwater Beach received more than 25 percent, making it “the clear winner,” according to the USA Today announcement. Clearwater Beach beat out other popular Florida beach destinations, including Siesta Key, Sanibel Island and Miami’s South Beach.

“Clearwater has always had the best beach in Florida, and this designation will enable us to market not only Clearwater but all of the Pinellas County to boost tourism,” said Mayor George N. Cretekos on receiving the news of the award. “It shows that the investment the city has made in Beach Walk and all the other programs on the beach has really been recognized.”

More than 140,000 viewed the poll announcement on the Clearwater/St. Petersburg Convention and Visitor’s Bureau official Facebook page, generating approximately 8,000 likes and 1,600 shares, making it the single most-viewed post ever for that organization’s site.

Clearwater has been recognized by Leatherman, also known as Dr. Beach, before. A coastal expert who travels the globe to identify the best beaches in the world, Leatherman picked Clearwater Beach as the Best Beach on the Gulf of Mexico in 1999.

According to USA Today, Clearwater will be featured in a Feb. 15 travel story in the publication as the winner of the competition.
